XI MUSPRES CONFERENCE / SEDEM

VII SYMPOSIUM MUSIC AND CRITICISM / UFPEL

INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE "MUSIC, PRESS, AND TRANSATLANTIC CULTURAL RELATIONS"

2-4 / NOVEMBER / 2023 (LOGROÑO & SAN MILLÁN DE LA COGOLLA, LA RIOJA, SPAIN)

PRESENTATION

The cultural relations forged by the inhabitants of the three continents bathed by the Atlantic Ocean have historically been marked by power imbalances in their multiple manifestations and by different kinds of alliances and networks in which language has played a substantial role. The study of these relations of diverse types in their complexity, from European colonialism to the present day, implies attending to a variety of phenomena, such as Music, which we propose to explore together with the Media, in this case, the Press published in Spanish and Portuguese, which has conveyed a crucial part of such transatlantic cultural relations.

Through their verbal and graphic discourses, the different Iberian and Ibero-American newspapers and journals have played a significant role in the construction / dismantling, promotion / censorship, and circulation / translation / assimilation of musical concepts, genres, and aesthetical ideologies. Today, these sources enable us to reconstruct transnational circuits of production and consumption of Music and Dance, as well as intellectual networks in which the different agents from these two fields, and musical press media itself, have played a fundamental role.

The study of Music and Press becomes undeniably significant in this transatlantic context, where continuous flows of migration and diaspora have left deep marks and scars and where Spanish and Portuguese-speaking communities have established close linguistic bonds. For this reason, the Study Group Music and Press (MUSPRES) of the Spanish Musicological Society and the Center of Arts of the Universidade Federal de Pelotas (Brazil) have joined together to celebrate the XI edition of the annual MUSPRES Conference and the VII edition of the International Symposium Music and Criticism, and invite the submission of proposals related to the following topics, without excluding other interdisciplinary contributions on Music, Press, and cultural relations among Europe, America, and Africa:

  • Music and Music Press in transatlantic cultural networks.
  • Distribution, reception, and transatlantic circulation of music journals and magazines in Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Production, consumption, and circulation of Music and Performing Arts genres and repertoires from -or thanks to- the Press.
  • Music press and Identity negotiation in contexts of migration and transatlantic diaspora.
  • Hispanic / Iberian / Afro-Latin American Music and Performing Arts Festivals in the Press.
  • Construction / discussion of musical and literary canons in the transatlantic context.
  • Language and Music in constructing transatlantic identities in -and through- the Press.
  • Translation, adaptation, and assimilation of Music- and literary-related texts, concepts and ideas in the Press Media.
  • Digital music (or music-related) press and transnational communities.
  • Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Newspaper Digitalization on Cultural and music press research.

The Universidad de La Rioja and the Campus Valle de la Lengua of La Rioja will host the International Conference “Music, Press, and Transatlantic Cultural Relations” to be held from the 2nd to the 4th of November 2023 in Logroño and the privileged environment of the Suso and Yuso Monasteries in San Millán de la Cogolla, a World Heritage Site since 1997 and symbol of the birth of the written Spanish language.

XI CONGRESO MUSPRES / SEDEM

  • Prensa musical digital y comunidades transnacionales hispano- y luso-parlantes.
